Retention Information

Although your braces have been removed, your orthodontic treatment isn’t finished yet. Full cooperation in wearing your retainers as instructed is crucial to maintaining the results of your treatment. If retainers are not worn correctly, your teeth may shift out of their properly aligned positions.

What to Expect with Retainers

After your braces are removed, you will need to wear your clear retainers full time for the first 6 weeks, except when eating, drinking, or brushing. You may only have water while wearing your clear retainers. After the first 6 weeks, you can begin wearing your clear retainers only at night, for 12-15 hours each night.

It’s important to note that if retainers are not worn as directed, teeth can start to shift back to their original positions. The amount of movement will vary by individual, but if you want to maintain your new smile, we recommend wearing your retainers at night indefinitely (12-15 hours). Once teeth begin to move, retainers may no longer fit properly and will need to be replaced.

Retainer Care & Cleaning

Proper care is essential to maintaining your retainer and ensuring it lasts. Here’s how to clean your removable retainer:

  • Soak the retainer in a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water during the day.
  • Brush your retainer with a toothbrush under running water to remove any plaque or buildup.
  • Avoid boiling your retainer or leaving it in hot places, such as in direct sunlight, as this may distort its shape.

When you’re not wearing your retainer, always store it in its case (not a napkin or pocket!) to protect it. Remember the phrase: “Not in your face, they are in the case!”

If your retainer is lost or damaged, contact us immediately so we can arrange for a replacement.

Bonded Retainer Care

If you have a bonded retainer, you will need to take extra care while cleaning your teeth. Brushing around the bonded retainer is similar to brushing around braces, but it’s also essential to floss regularly. Use a floss threader, soft pic, or water flosser (highly recommended) to clean between your teeth.

Eating Restrictions with Bonded Retainers

Since bonded retainers are glued to your teeth, it’s important to avoid biting into hard foods, such as apples, pears, candy bars, and frozen foods, as these can dislodge the retainer. Always cut hard foods into smaller pieces and chew using your back teeth.

We recommend scheduling a cleaning and check-up with your family dentist to maintain the health of your teeth and gums. We’re confident your dentist will be pleased with the results of your orthodontic treatment.
