Expanders

Expanding the palate is an essential part of orthodontic treatment for some patients. If you or your child is undergoing treatment with an expander, it’s important to know what to expect during the process and how to care for the expander properly.

What to Expect With an Expander

While using a rapid palatal expander, there are several common experiences that you may notice as the treatment progresses. These are all normal and expected effects:

  • A temporary lisp or slurred speech
  • Excess saliva for a few days
  • Initial difficulty in chewing or swallowing
  • Pressure on teeth, palate, and nose after adjustments
  • Temporary irritation of the tongue
  • Possible headache
  • A slight change in facial appearance
  • The bite may feel “off”
  • Certain foods may catch on the expander
  • A temporary space will appear between the upper front teeth as the expansion progresses

These effects are temporary and not cause for concern. If discomfort arises, a mild over-the-counter pain reliever can help ease the discomfort. It’s important not to remove the expander prematurely as these sensations are part of the process of expanding the palate.

Expanding the Palate

Here’s a step-by-step guide to adjusting your expander:

  • Have the patient lie on their back with their head at the edge of a bed or over the arm of a sofa. Ensure there’s adequate lighting from a bright lamp or flashlight.
  • Opening the mouth as wide as possible will minimize the gag reflex.
  • Insert the key into the center hole of the expander and turn it in the direction of the arrows indicated on the expander.
  • Continue turning the expander until you can see the next hole.
  • Carefully remove the key in a down-and-back motion. Be cautious not to unturn the expander when removing the key.
  • Follow the doctor’s instructions on how often to turn the expander, and try to make adjustments at the same time each day for consistency.

Diet and Cleaning Your Expander

Proper care is essential to maintain your expander and ensure treatment goes smoothly. Here are some guidelines:

  • Maintain a soft diet for the first few days after receiving the expander to avoid irritation or discomfort.
  • Avoid hard or sticky foods, like popcorn, caramel, or taffy, that could dislodge the expander.
  • Brush thoroughly after meals to remove food and plaque buildup from the expander. This will keep it clean and functioning properly.

Following these care instructions will help ensure the best possible outcome from your expander treatment.
